Crowley Lake Fishing Report, June 23, 2017
The bite overall the past two weeks was very good to epic. There were several days where the bite slowed significantly or shut off. The best locations were in the North Arm between Alligator and the North Landing in 16 to 18 feet of water. However as of this report, the hot bite is taking place at McGee Bay on the 395 west side of the Bay.
The lake level is on the rise and the snow melt off is peaking due to the current heat wave that hit California this past week. The streams and creeks are flowing way beyond normal levels forming new rushing waterways and bodies of stillwater that look like lakes. The water clarity is good and weed beds are starting to grow. The current weather pattern is forecasted to be here the next ten days.
The latest hot spot has been McGee Bay along the 395 west corridor. The fish bite there has been very good to "En Fuego", since this past Sunday Father's Day. (Interesting to note: the same thing happened last year, right on Father's Day. Huge numbers of fish rolled into McGee and the bite went off. Lots of big fish showed up! It was a wide open bite that was much more spread out. That bite lasted for a solid four weeks. It was extremely exciting, and my quote last year to describe the incredible bite, ("It's like fishing in a hatchery."). Most every fly fishing angler is hooking up consistently in 12 to 18 feet. All three trout species are congregated along the 395 west corridor and are starting to slowly work their way throughout the bay. The productive midge imitations have been your blood midges, gray patterns and copper tigers.
Perch report: The perch bite has also has been on fire in the same area. Perch limits have been reported to me by various angler's since Father's day. Most of the perching is taking place in shallower water just outside the growing weed beds.
NOW is a great time to book a guide trip to experience the excitement of this great trout fishery. Check out pictures of clients who were aboard the Trucha Fly Fishing Machine (TFFM).
